Michel Gautier’s Allegoric Performances Reveal the Consequences of Human Greed on the Environment

ART & ENVIRONMENT
BY SEAN LEYWES
For more than a decade now, the environment has been at the center of intense scientific debates. At the center of the debate is global warming. For some scientists, the unprecedented heat and unpredictable climate change is the result of inordinate human activities, including the increased burning of fossil fuels and the obliteration of forests. Other scientists have, however, argued against such postulations, noting that the fact that earth is heating up is just the nature of things and not because of any excessive human activities. What is often missing from all these scientific debates is the role of materialism and chronic capitalism in the destruction of the environment. Michel Gautier, an artist who draws his inspiration from “the forest” and earth, notes that predatory capitalism is at the core of the destruction of the environment. His allegoric performances are reminders of how fragile earth is and why we must do everything to protect it. Michel Gautier is a multi-disciplinary artist. He lives and works in Val David. Quebec. Canada.
